1 Corinthians 6:16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

7:1 Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

The gospel has implications on all of life. Paul preached Christ crucified, and this message of the cross was, to those who were being called, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The cross has implications on every area of life. The gospel message is God’s wisdom to make sense of all of life and his power to live life in such a way as to bring glory to God. A major problem in Corinth, and for us today, is understanding the implications of the gospel of Christ crucified on all of life. Paul, in a very down to earth way, helps them and us to make that connection.

In chapters 1-5 he addresses issues that have been brought to his attention;

1 Corinthians 1:11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers.

1 Corinthians 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you…

In chapter 5:9-13 he clarifies their misunderstanding of his previous communication. “I wrote to you in my letter… not at all meaning…” They took what he had written in a way that was not at all what he had meant so he spells out what he had intended.

In chapter 6, he begins to address slogans that they were using to justify all sorts of evil. ‘All things are lawful for me’ ‘Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy both one and the other’. They may have even been things the apostle had said, or summaries of his teaching, but now they were being used to open the door to practices that have no place among those who claim to be followers of Jesus.

Questions?

Here in chapter 7, he begins to address issues raised by the Corinthians in their correspondence to him. He says;

7:1 Now concerning the matters about which you wrote:

He will address five more of these matters in the course of this letter. Here he addresses abstinence, celibacy, and marriage; in 7:25 he says ‘now concerning virgins’; in 8:1 ‘now concerning things offered to idols’; in 12:1 ‘now concerning spiritual gifts’; in16:1 ‘now concerning the collection for the saints’; in 16:12 ‘now concerning Apollos’. We don’t know what kind of letter the Corinthians sent Paul. Maybe they were honest questions that had come up since the apostle had left. Maybe they were hotly debated issues in the church, and they were looking for Paul to settle their disputes. Maybe the letter wasn’t asking questions at all; maybe they were stating their conclusions and seeking to impress Paul, or even correct him. We don’t know. Whatever the nature of their letter, Paul was happy to address each issue. None of these topics were off-limits. Paul was not afraid of questions. He was eager to take the wisdom of God in the foolishness of the cross and apply it to any and all of life’s situations.

Pendulum Swing

The issue they raise here has to do with sexual intimacy. ‘It is good for a man not to touch a woman’ was probably another slogan that some in the Corinthian church tried to enforce. Corinth was an immoral city. Temple prostitutes were available, pornographic images were everywhere, it was not uncommon for people to be married and divorced and remarried and divorced many times over, and it was also not uncommon for those who were married to keep mistresses and have affairs. This had even crept into the church. In chapter 5, Paul addresses the man who was having relations with his step-mom. In chapter 6 he has to tell the church that the body is not meant for sexual immorality, and that it is unthinkable for believers to make use of prostitutes. There is a natural human tendency in this kind of setting to swing the pendulum far in the other direction. All we see, all we hear, all we have experienced is sex being misused and perverted and distorted. Paul has told us to flee pornea; flee sexual immorality; so we will flee from sexual intimacy all together. From this passage it appears that there were some who were over-reacting to their culture and coming to the conclusion that all sex is evil and to be avoided, even within marriage.

Paul warns Timothy that there would be false teachers in the early church who among other things would forbid marriage.

1Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

Paul calls this kind of ascetic spirituality a departure from the faith, and the ‘teaching of demons’. God created all things, including marriage, for us to enjoy.

Paul addresses a similar issue in the church in Colossae, where he writes:

Colossians 2:20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ( referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

The man-made regulation ‘do not touch’ uses the same word we have in this passage ‘it is good for a man not to touch a woman’. Paul says that this has the appearance of wisdom, but is powerless in the real battle against the indulgence of the flesh. Over-reacting to sin by promoting self-made religion of asceticism and severity to the body can actually make the problem worse, not better.

Strong Medicine for Sick Souls

You say ‘it is good for a man not to touch a woman’; I say no, because of the immoralities, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The remedy for rampant immorality is not a pendulum swing to the other extreme to demand a denial of all bodily pleasure. The remedy is a healthy view of human sexuality as it was designed by God. In the last section, Paul referred to the creation narrative, where God said ‘the two shall become one flesh’. The Corinthians are saying ‘it is good for a man not to touch a woman’. God said ‘it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him” (Gen.2:18). God brought the woman to the man, naked, in paradise, and he blessed them and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. God said this was good, very good. God intended for the man to touch his wife, and for the wife to touch her husband. Marriage is the appropriate context for human sexuality to find its intended fulfillment. The author of Hebrews says:

Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

Monogamy

Notice, by his language Paul rules out multiple partners. Each man should have his own wife, singular. And each woman should have her own husband, singular. Marriage is the union of one man and one woman for life. This is a God-given shield against the fiery darts of the adversary.

Mutual Obligation

I Corinthians 7:2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

Paul unashamedly uses the language of reciprocal belonging. This is shocking for any first century document, where so often men were free to do as they wished and women had no rights. Paul says that each man should have (the language of possession) his own wife, and that each woman should have (the same language of possession) her own man. This is the language of belonging. We can hear echoes from the Song of Songs.

Song of Solomon 2:16 My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies.

Song of Solomon 6:3 I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; he grazes among the lilies.

Song of Solomon 7:10 I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.

This is the language of reciprocal belonging, of ownership. I am his, I belong to my beloved, and he belongs to me, he is mine. When I enter into the marriage relationship, I give myself to my spouse. I surrender my rights and my independence and voluntarily belong to another. To make sure we understand what this means, Paul spells it out for us.

1 Corinthians 7:3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.

This reflects the language of the Old Testament, where the practice of polygamy was not condoned, but regulated.

Exodus 21:10 If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights.

A husband is obligated to provide for his wife’s physical and emotional needs. The language used here is the language of indebtedness. By entering into marriage, he owes her a debt that he must pay. Everything that it means to be a husband; leader, provider, nurturer, instructor, encourager, strength, support, respect, patience, kindness, tenderness, compassion, intimacy, love; to bring her physical and emotional wholeness and completion is his debt to her.

There is no room here for using the other person merely to gratify one’s own desires. The language here is language of giving, not taking. When I focus on what I am owed and demand my rights, things typically do not go well. When I focus on my debt and give sacrificially and gladly to meet the needs of my wife, things tend to go remarkably better.

Intimacy within the marriage is to be perfectly reciprocal. ‘Likewise the wife to her husband’. As the husband owes a debt he is obligated to give to his wife, so the wife is obligated to give to her husband what she owes to him. Honor, encouragement, respect, help, submission to his godly leadership, intimacy, love; to bring him physical and emotional wholeness and completion is her debt to him.

1 Corinthians 7:4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

This was as staggering a statement in the first century Roman world as it is for us today. To say that the husband has authority over would be expected. But to say that the wife has the exact same authority over her husband’s body as he had over hers was revolutionary in Paul’s day. To say that anybody has authority over anybody else’s body is contrary to our culture, but this is exactly what the Bible says. This is the same word that he used in 6:12.

1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by [brought under the authority of] anything.

You are not your own. You were bought with a price. If you are a follower of Jesus, you belong to God, you are under his authority. And if you are married, you body belongs, first to God, and then to your spouse. And then Paul gives a clear command.

Stop Depriving One Another

1 Corinthians 7:5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

This could be translated ‘stop depriving one another’ or ‘stop defrauding one another.’ Celibacy, singleness, and abstinence is a legitimate option for believers, but it is not an option if you are married. The Corinthians tried to sound noble and spiritual; ‘my body is devoted to God; therefore I cannot fulfill my spouse’s base desires’. We simply say ‘I have a headache’ or ‘I’m just not in the mood’. Either way, the results are the same. And Paul calls it robbery. You owe your spouse a debt. Stop defrauding one another. Physical intimacy within the marriage is not dirty or defiling, it’s not a reward for good behavior. It is a good God-given gift, to be enjoyed regularly and frequently. Paul gives us three clear conditions that must be met to ever legitimately deprive one another. It must be by mutual agreement, it must be for a limited time, and it must be for the purpose of the couple devoting themselves to prayer. Paul’s reason is powerful. So that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self control. Paul exhorts us to take up this weapon of God against the onslaught of satanic temptation. This is the wisdom of Proverbs; “rejoice in the wife of your youth… be intoxicated always in her love” (Prov.5:18-19). We are commanded to flee sexual immorality. If you are married, the way you flee is to flee into the arms of your spouse.

Paul has reminded us that we are not our own. As believers in Jesus, we belong to God. We have been bought with a price, with the precious blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Our purpose is to glorify God. We were created to bring honor and praise to God. We were redeemed to worship him. So, glorify God in your body. For a married couple, physical intimacy is a way to glorify God with your body. God intends for you to enjoy his good gifts and give thanks to him in everything. Glorify God in your body.

Again, in the context of a severe rebuke, in the context of sin and selfishness and sexual immorality, against this dark backdrop, we have a most beautiful reminder of the gospel, the good news, and a pointer to the ultimate purpose for which we were created, and to which we have been rescued.

Apparently the Corinthian believers were claiming under the banner of Christian liberty that they were free to live immoral self-centered, greedy lifestyles. Paul is quick to point out that those who continue in willful disobedience to Christ, those who refuse to follow Jesus, give evidence that they are not part of the family of God, and will not inherit the kingdom. He points them past the mere thought of what is permissible to ask what is profitable, what is beneficial. He warns that so-called liberties can lead us into bondage to sin, proving that what we might flaunt as freedom may become for us another form of slavery. He raises our sights beyond merely gratifying our physical desires, to realize that what we were really made for, that only which will fulfill our innermost desires, is the Lord. We were made to enjoy relationship with our Creator. He points us to the human sexual relationship as creating a one flesh union, and he parallels the intimacy of that union to our union with Jesus, which brings us into, not a one flesh union, but a one spirit union with him.

Do You Not Know?

In verse 19, the Apostle asks the eighth of ten ‘do you not know’ questions in 1 Corinthians. Christian doctrine has practical implications. What we believe affects how we live. The problems in the church are evidence that they have not grasped the implications of biblical truth. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? These are basic truths that he had taught them as new believers in Jesus. They ought to know this.

Indwelling Spirit

Even in the Old Testament Scriptures, we see the coming of the Holy Spirit anticipated in passages like

Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

God promised that there was a day coming that he would put his own Spirit in his people.

We hear Jesus saying:

Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus told his disciples:

John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit, who had been with them,would come to live inside of them. This is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies that God would put his Spirit within his people. This was a promise worth waiting for. In Acts 1, Jesus,

Acts 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Jesus had said in John 7:

John 7:37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

This became the evidence in the New Testament church of genuine faith in Jesus. This was a major argument for allowing Gentile believers who had not been circumcised into the church. In Acts 10, Peter argues:

Acts 10:47 “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”

In Acts 19, Paul asks an isolated group who had only been baptized with the baptism of John:

Acts 19:2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

Paul had already told the Corinthians in 3:16

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

In that passage, he was addressing the Corinthians as a body of believers, who together were indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Here, in chapter 6, he is referring to each individual believer, specifically to their physical bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?…

This was a fulfillment of what Jesus said to the woman of Samaria about the place of worship.

John 4:21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

No longer in the temple in Jerusalem. Not in the temple in Samaria. Now we worship the Father wherever we are, in spirit and truth, in the temple of our bodies. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God Omnipresent

This passage provides strong evidence for the full deity of the Holy Spirit. “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” A temple is the place where God lives. If being indwelt by the Holy Spirit constitutes our bodies as a temples, then the Holy Spirit must be fully divine. This also argues for the everywhere presence of God. How could Paul in Ephesus, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, write to the believers in Corinth who are also indwelt by the same Holy Spirit? How could we believers in Utah be indwelt by the same Holy Spirit who fills the believers in the underground church in China? God is Spirit, and God is everywhere present. Each of our bodies, together with the bodies of every believer in Jesus, serve as temples of the Holy Spirit who is within you.

The Spirit a Gift from God

Paul tells us that all this is a gift. The indwelling Spirit is from God.

Jesus continually used the language of giving in relation to the Holy Spirit. A gift is different from wages. There is nothing we could ever do to earn the right to have the Holy Spirit reside in us. Jesus described his Father as loving to give good gifts to his children. God is the giver and we, undeserving recipients receive his gifts.

Jesus told us that his Father would be the one who would give us the Spirit. This tells us that the Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father. Here again is another pointer in the Scripture to the doctrine of the Trinity. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three distinct persons, each equally divine, each everywhere present, yet there is only one God. In this passage, you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, whom you have as a gift from God the Father, and we are each members of our Lord Jesus, having been joined to Jesus.

This is why it is so important what we do with our physical bodies. Your body is meant for the Lord Jesus. Your physical body will be resurrected by the Father. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Do not desecrate the temple with anything that would grieve the Holy Spirit. Do not do anything with your body that would be inappropriate to bring Jesus into. In the context, Paul is warning against sexual immorality which is unthinkable for the one who belongs to Jesus.

You Are Not Your Own

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

This is a strong statement in today’s culture. We take pride in our freedom. Paul is in no uncertain terms declaring that if you are a follower of Jesus, you are no longer free. You are not your own. We want to be autonomous. We want to be able to do what we want to do, when we want to do it, and nobody can tell me what I can and can’t do. Paul says here that you are not your own. You are no longer in charge. You are not master of your own destiny. You do not have the freedom to choose even what you do with your body. In fact your body is no longer your own. You belong to someone. You are owned. You are possessed and occupied by someone. What you do with your body is no longer yours to decided. Of course, the bible never describes us as moving from freedom and autonomy into slavery to God. The way the bible always describes our situation is moving from hard bondage to a cruel taskmaster into slavery to Jesus.

John 8:34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.

The bible does describe this service to Jesus as true freedom, not the freedom to do whatever we want, including the freedom to destroy ourselves. The bible describes service to God as the freedom to be what we were created to be, the freedom to love and serve and worship our good Creator.

Bought With A Price

We are not our own. We are owned by God and occupied by the Holy Spirit. Paul backs up this assertion with the fact that we have been purchased by Jesus Christ. He says ”for you were bought with a price.” This word ‘bought’ is unique. It means ‘to buy in the marketplace’ and it is used in the gospels for buying food, supplies, property, cattle, and items of value. This is one of six places in the New Testament where this term describes God purchasing people for himself. In chapter 7 of 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses the issue of slavery and freedom and says:

1 Corinthians 7:23 You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.

In 2 Peter he describes the incongruity of false teachers,

2 Peter 2:1 …even denying the Master who bought them…

In Revelation this word is used 3 times to describe those who belong to God. In chapter 5, the price paid is specified.

Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed [bought] people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,

Jesus paid the price for us by his own blood.

Peter uses the more common word for ransom to describe the price paid.

1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Gomer

We are not our own. We were bought with a price. In order to help us understand our purchase, God has given us the picture of Hosea. God told Hosea to take a wife out of prostitution. After she had become his wife and borne children to Hosea, she apparently left him and returned to her life of prostitution. She ended up on the auction block as a slave. Hosea was told to go and buy her back again. She did not deserve his love. She was rescued. And after she returned to her former way of life, she deserved the humiliation and shame she suffered. But her husband came to the marketplace where she was being sold, paid the price to buy her back, covered her shame, and brought her home to himself. That is the condition we were in. We were unworthy, unlovable, offensive, full of shame, and all of our own doing. Yet God loved us. He paid the ultimate price to buy back what was rightfully his. He brought us to himself to be his own treasured possession.

Our Ultimate Purpose

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

What is our response to be? How should we respond to God’s unfathomable grace? We cannot be proud. We cannot draw attention to ourselves. What do we think of Gomer? We don’t think much of her. She is not the main character of the story. She is humbled, but she is loved. What do we think about Hosea? We are amazed at his love, his forgiveness, his grace. We see his character shine. That is the purpose of our purchase. We are not the main character in the story. It is not all about us. God’s character, his love, his forgiveness, his mercy and grace is on display.

We cannot act as if our life is our own to live as we wish. We sold ourselves into slavery, but we were bought back with the precious blood of Jesus. If by God’s grace we have become followers of Jesus, we must follow Jesus. We must listen to what he says and do what he tells us. He is our Master and Lord. He is our king. We must submit to his authority.

How can I glorify God in my body? I can use my body for things that honor God. I can say with Joseph, “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Gen.39:9). I have been purchased with a great price for a great purpose. My body is meant for the Lord. I can live with purpose. My purpose is to glorify God and enjoy him. I am now free to love the Lord my God with all my heart and soul and mind and strength. I am free to love my neighbor as myself.

Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. Paul addresses sexual immorality and lawsuits in the church as evidence that this church was not understanding the implications of the gospel and not walking in the way of the cross. We want to be wise, not with worldly human wisdom, but with the wisdom of God, the wisdom of the cross. In this passage, the apostle addresses the issue of Christian liberty, specifically as it applies to human sexuality.

Paul was passionate about Christian liberty. He wrote a letter to the believers in Galatia warning them against defecting from Christ to a different counterfeit gospel, a false gospel of law keeping. He affirms that ‘Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law’ (Gal.3:13). He affirms that it is ‘for freedom that Christ has set us free’ and he exhorts us to ‘stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery’ (Gal.5:1). He affirms that those who are led by the Spirit are not under the law’ (Gal.5:18). In his letter to the Romans he boldly states ‘For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law’ (Rom.3:28), and he affirms that ‘you are not under law but under grace’ (Rom.6:14). He says that we have ‘died to the law through the body of Christ’ (Rom.7:4) and ‘we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive’ (Rom.7:6).

All Things Are Lawful

There was a slogan going around that attempted to encapsulate the apostle’s teaching on liberty; ‘all things are lawful’. Paul quotes this maxim twice in this verse and twice in 10:23. Whether Paul said this himself or someone else coined the phrase in an attempt to capture the essence of his teaching, this slogan was popular in Corinth. The problem with catch phrases and slogans is that they are open to misinterpretation. And that is the problem in Corinth. In chapter 6, the issue is sexual immorality. In chapter 10 the issue is food sacrificed to idols. ‘All things are lawful’. Apparently this phrase encapsulated their attitude to all things gray and many things black. Paul has just warned them against self-deception. They were in danger of fooling themselves on the most important of all issues. He said in no uncertain terms that those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God. All those things can be forgiven and you can be washed clean through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, but those who willfully continue in those kind of lifestyles demonstrate that they have not been transformed by the grace of Jesus.

Not All Things Are Helpful

He starts by giving two qualifying statements to this slogan ‘all things are lawful for me’. First, although all things may be lawful, not all things are helpful or profitable. The question of Christian liberty must not be ‘what can I get away with and not forfeit my salvation?’ or ‘how close to the edge can I get without unwittingly plummeting to my eternal ruin?’

Jesus uses this same word ‘helpful’ or ‘profitable’ in Matthew 5.

Matthew 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it from you! For it is better (profitable) for you that one of your members be destroyed than your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it from you! For it is better (profitable) for you that one of your limbs be destroyed than your whole body go into hell.

Jesus uses it again in Matthew 18.

Matthew 18:6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

If we are asking ‘what is permissible?’ we are asking the wrong question, and it is evidence of a heart problem. We ought to be asking instead ‘what is best?’ ‘what is the ideal?’ ‘what is the goal?’ Paul sums up this idea in Philippians 4:8.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

In Galatians, Paul holds up for us a higher standard.

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

We are no longer under the law; we are now free to fulfill the law of love.

I Will Not Be Dominated By Anything

1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

Paul’s second qualification of this statement is that he will not be brought under the power or authority or control of anything. I am not under law but under grace. I could say that it is within my Christian liberty to smoke or drink or gamble or view porn or overeat or indulge in the latest fashion or gadget or whatever, but what happens when my so-called Christian liberty begins to control me? There is a word play here in the original that is difficult to capture in a translation. Some attempts are ‘all things are in my power, but I will not be overpowered by anything’ (Edwards) or I have ‘liberty to do anything, but I will not let anything take liberties with me’ (Thiselton, p.462). There is a danger that our rights and freedoms and liberties will begin to control us. Paul says in Romans 6

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Many who claim Christian liberty have become slaves to their various ‘freedoms’. Any freedom that allows you to plunge yourself back into slavery is not genuine freedom. True freedom is freedom to do what is best, freedom to be who you were created to be, freedom to love and serve the Lord Jesus.

Food For The Stomach and the Stomach For Food

In verse 13, Paul addresses another slogan that was used to justify a whole lot of things. ‘Food is for the stomach, and the stomach for food.’ This idea is still popular today. When your physical appetite is hungry, you should eat. When your sexual appetite is hungry, you should satisfy it. God made us with appetites and needs, and he meant for those appetites to be satisfied, not frustrated. The implication becomes clear in the rest of the verse. ‘Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food; sexual pleasure is for the body and the body is for sexual pleasure’.

One difficulty in understanding this passage is what part of these statements are the popular slogans and what are Paul’s rebuttals. There were no quotation marks in the original, so we have to try to understand from the context and content where the quotation ends. Probably the statement ‘and God will destroy both one and the other’ is also part of the slogan. The idea is that food and the stomach, and the body and sexuality are temporary and therefore unimportant. They are part of the lower physical life. In Greek thought there was a division made between body and spirit, material and immaterial. What was done in the body had no effect on the spirit. Those who had achieved a higher plane of spiritual understanding knew that they were free to do whatever they pleased with their bodies, because they believed their bodies would ultimately be destroyed and only their spirit would live on. This is not a biblical idea. Jesus, in his resurrected body, ate food. Jesus spoke with his disciples about eating and drinking at his table in his kingdom (Lk.22:30). Paul combats this thinking by pointing us to the resurrection of the body, a topic he will treat more fully in chapter 15.

The Body is for the Lord

The stomach may be designed for food, but it is not meant for gluttony. The body is designed by God for sexual pleasure within the marriage covenant, but it is not intended for sexual immorality. The body has a much higher purpose. Paul gives us an amazing statement here. The body is not for sexual immorality, the body is for the Lord. Our ultimate purpose, our physical design is to bring glory to God. We were made to worship God. We were made to serve him.

Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

Romans 11:36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

We, our physical bodies, were meant for the Lord. We are meant to bring glory to God.

The Lord is for the Body

The second half of this statement is even more amazing. The body is meant for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. As food satisfies the hunger of the stomach, only Jesus can satisfy the deepest longings of who we are.

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

The Lord is meant for the body. Only in relationship with Jesus can we find true fulfillment, true satisfaction, true joy. Our bodies were meant for the Lord, and the Lord for our bodies. This raises the value and worth of the physical body, and it points us to our true purpose as physical human beings.

Do You Not Know?

Paul asks two more rhetorical questions ‘do you not know?’ implying that they ought to know these things, and they ought to be drawing the appropriate conclusions from these truths. They are acting as if they are ignorant of these things, so Paul spells it out for them.

1 Corinthians 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

The first thing we ought to know is that our bodies are members of Christ. As someone who has been transformed by Jesus, we are possessed by him and have become part of his body. Christ now lives in me. To tear away the body parts of Jesus and force them into intimate contact with a prostitute is unthinkable!

He asks a second question: ‘Do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her?’ and he defends this from God’s statement in Genesis ‘The two will become one flesh’. This extends beyond prostitution to any immoral sexual relationship, any sexual intimacy outside of the marriage covenant. Sexual intimacy is a powerful force that is meant to create unity and intimacy in the context of lifelong commitment. There is no such thing as casual sex. Sex cannot ever be a temporary one time event. There is a joining, a gluing or cementing together. This is the same word from the Genesis passage translated ‘cleave’ or ‘hold fast to’. There is a spiritual union created through physical intimacy. We were not meant for immorality. Our bodies were meant for the Lord. We were made to be joined to the Lord, we were designed for intimacy with our Creator, to enjoy that inseparable bond of love and union with the only one who can truly fulfill us. What a high privilege! To be joined to the Lord, to become one spirit with him! We get a glimpse into what this means when Paul says:

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

He loved me. He gave himself for me. He now lives in me. When we realize this, the thought of sexual immorality becomes as repulsive and offensive as it ought to be.

Run Away!

Paul has some very practical advice for us.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

Flee sexual immorality. Flee porn. Run away! Keep running! Make it your habitual continual practice to run away from immorality. In the words of Kenny Rogers ‘You’ve got to know when to walk away and know when to run’, and when there is sexual temptation, that is when to run. Leave you coat, leave your computer, just run. Don’t linger. Don’t delay. Run and don’t look back. Sexual sin is unique. Sexual sin is against your own body in a way that no other sin is. Not that sexual sin is worse than any other sin, but sexual sin has effects and implications that run deeper than any other sin. The body is sacred. What you do with your body affects your soul. It affects your relationship with the Lord. Listen to the wisdom and warning of Proverbs.

Proverbs 5:1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, 2 that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. 3 For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, 4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; 6 she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it. 7 And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. 8 Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, 9 lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, 10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, 11 and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, 12 and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! 13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. 14 I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.” 15 Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. 16 Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? 17 Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. 18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, 19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. 20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress? 21 For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. 22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. 23 He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.

Be wise! Flee sexual immorality! Do not be deceived. The sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed. You were sanctified. You were justified. You were made for so much more! Your body is meant for the Lord, and the Lord for your body.

6:1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! 4 So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, 6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? 7 To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? 8 But you yourselves wrong and defraud—even your own brothers!

This is one of the most beautiful descriptions of the transforming power of the gospel found anywhere in the bible, and it comes in the context of sexual immorality and lawsuits in the church. The darkest of sins provide the backdrop for the grace of God to be seen in all its vivid majesty. The Corinthian believers were ripping each other off, taking each other to court, wronging and defrauding their own brothers. They were displaying their misunderstanding and misapplication of the cross. They were not living in sync with the gospel. Paul says that by taking one another to court, they are already admitting defeat, defeat of a much greater magnitude than they would ever sustain in the courts of their day. Jesus asked ‘what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? (Mark 8:36)’ Those in the church in Corinth were in grave danger of being self-deceived on the most serious of all issues; they might believe they were on their way to heaven, when in reality they would spend eternity separated from the presence of God.

Unforgiveness will Keep You From God’s Kingdom

This issue of forgiveness really is that serious. Jesus taught us to pray that God would

Matthew 6:12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And then he said:

Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Lawsuits in the church was evidence of a lack of forgiveness. What a terrifying thing to forfeit the forgiveness of God because of my own self-centeredness and greed. If I demand my own rights, I just might get what I deserve, and that is a fearful prospect. Jesus told a story that drives home this point. Peter was asking him how often we should forgive a brother who sinned against him. The story is in Matthew 18.

Matthew 18:23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

To feel the weight of this story, we need to understand that one talent was the equivalent of about 20 years wages of a laborer. So the debt the servant owed, ten thousand talents, was the equivalent of 200,000 year’s wages. In contrast, a denarius was one day’s wages for a laborer, so the servant was owed 100 day’s wages. If you only earned a dollar a day, the servant was owed $100 by his fellow servant, but he owed the king 52 million dollars (and remember, that is if you only make one dollar a day; if you make $30,000 a year, that would be $6 billion). At first read, we might think the king harsh, who would sell the servant, his wife, and his children, so that the debt could be paid. But when we realize the magnitude of his debt, the obscene embezzlement that he was guilt of to put himself in that much debt, the insane lifestyle it would take to spend so much, the punishment seems mild. And the king was willing to forgive him the entire debt! Now we begin to feel how outrageous this servant’s attitude was toward his fellow servant who had wronged him so little.

Our refusal to forgive demonstrates that we do not understand what it cost us to be forgiven. Unforgiveness toward a fellow servant shows what little appreciation we have for the weight of our own debt before God. This kind of unforgiving attitude displays that our heart has not been touched at all by the good news.

Unrighteous Will Not Inherit the Kingdom of God

Paul asks the fifth of ten questions in 1 Corinthians indicting their ignorance of basic truth. ‘Do you not know?’ These are things that should be self-evident truths, plain for all to see. You, who claim to be so wise, do you not know? ‘Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?’ God is a righteous God, and his kingdom is a kingdom of righteousness. For God’s kingdom to be a righteous kingdom, no one who is unrighteous can be admitted.

Do Not Be Deceived

Paul again warns his readers not to be deceived, not to be led astray from the straight path. There is a danger here of being misled. There is a deceptive danger to think that because God is gracious and compassionate and slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness, then we can continue to willfully embrace a lifestyle of open rebellion toward him and expect him to put up with it. Paul warns us that we must not be deceived. The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.

He expands his list of behaviors and attitudes from chapter 5 that are incompatible with those who have experienced the new birth.

Sexual immorality is incompatible with genuine Christianity. Sexual addiction, pornography, any kind of sexual intimacy with anyone outside of a monogamous marriage relationship is out of step with the gospel.

Idolatry is unacceptable among those who claim to follow Jesus. Allowing anything or anyone to be more significant to you than God is idolatry. Sports heroes or celebrities or video games or pastimes or recreation or work or money or husband or wife or children or anything that consumes more of your energy and attention and affection than God may be an idol, and bowing to any other god is incompatible with the gospel.

Adultery, dishonoring the marriage covenant, being unfaithful to one’s vows before God, is not to be tolerated among those who have been made part of the church, the bride of Christ. Covenant unfaithfulness is incompatible with the people of God.

Homosexuality is not an alternative for those who belong to Christ. Paul uses two distinct words here, referring to the active and passive partners in a homosexual relationship, which are together translated ‘men who practice homosexuality’ in our version. Same-sex intimacy is contrary to nature according to Romans 1, and is contrary to the gospel.

Thieves, those who take what does not belong to them, even if they use the legal system to do it, should not expect a part in the kingdom of God.

Greedy, those who are eager for gain, those who hold on to things and want more and more and more, do not show evidence that God is all-satisfying.

Drunkards, those who come under the control or influence of any substance are not being controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Revilers, those who are abusive, mistreating others with word or deed. These are not transformed by the word of God.

Swindlers, extortioners, those who by force or cunning would defraud or scam others.

Do not be deceived, those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

This is not a checklist of bad things to avoid in order to pass the test and enter heaven. Rather, these behaviors and attitudes are evidence of a heart that has not been transformed by the grace of God. Those who persist in sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, homosexuality, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, swindlers, they will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Inheriting the Kingdom

Note that Paul does not say ‘they will not earn the kingdom. Twice he uses this word ‘inherit’. An inheritance is something that happens to sons. An inheritance cannot be earned. An inheritance is given. It is what comes to those who are in the family. And within a family, there are family resemblances. A son begins to act like his father.

And Such Were Some of You!

1 Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Now we get to the good news in this passage. ‘And such were some of you!’ There is hope for the idolater. There is hope for the drunk, for the alcoholic, for the substance abuser. There is hope for the sexually immoral, for the adulterer, for the one who struggles with porn or homosexuality. There is hope for the thief, for the greedy, for the con artist, for the liar, for the cheat. There is hope for the abusive. There is hope for the unrighteous, and we all were unrighteous. But note the past tense. ‘Such were some of you’. That is what we once were. But those things define us no longer. We are those things no more. The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. But Jesus did not come to call righteous people. He came to call sinners (Mk.2:17). Sinners like you. Sinners like me.

The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. But in Christ Jesus, we are unrighteous no longer. We have been clothed in the perfect righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have been adopted into his family, we have been made new.

But You Were Washed

We were washed. Jesus said:

Matthew 23:25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Jesus’ primary concern is the heart. When the heart of a sinner is transformed, it will naturally produce good fruit. We were filthy. We were all the things that are abhorrent to God. But in Jesus, we are cleansed thoroughly, inside and out. 1 John says:

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

We have this picture of the saints in Revelation:

Revelation 7:14 … They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Listen to this prophesy in Ezekiel:

Ezekiel 36:25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

We have been thoroughly cleansed, made new, given a new heart and the Holy Spirit.

Paul in Romans views this cleansing through the lens of baptism:

Romans 6:3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. … 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Our old self was crucified with Christ and we have been raised to a new kind of life. We were washed.

You Were Sanctified

We were sanctified. Set apart. Made holy. Paul was sent by Jesus to the Gentiles

Acts 26:18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Jesus prayed for his followers:

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Paul prayed:

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

You Were Justified

We were justified. Acquitted. Declared not guilty. Pronounced righteous. Jesus told the story of the two who went to the temple to pray. He says:

Luke 18:13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The one who admitted his sin and cried out to God for mercy was justified by God.

Romans tells us:

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Romans 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

When we believe in Jesus, we are counted righteous in Christ. We are set apart. We are washed clean.

In The Name

We are washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. All these things happen to us based on the reputation and character of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us. The triune God, Father, Son and Spirit is at work to take a sinner and transform him into a saint, qualified to inherit the kingdom of God. You may be sexually immoral, an idolater, an adulterer, a homosexual, a thief, greedy, drunk, slanderous, swindling, but God can transform your heart and make you new. You can be washed, sanctified, justified, made righteous in his sight. Cry out to him for mercy and he will rescue you.
